FIRST FRIDAY NOTES October 2019
We know shopping for good wine at other places can be scary, so we’ve selected 5 wines for the month of October that you can try - then put them all on sale this month to take the fear out of the process.
Gorghi Tondi Coste A Preola Grillo - Preola is a World Wildlife Federation sanctuary and Tenuta Gorghi Tondi is an organic winery working within. Up keeping the history and heritage of this pristine environment is at the forefront of what they do and what they’re about. Grillo (pronounced GREE-lo) is about as hot as it can get, with Italian production increasing nearly 200% in the last decade. It is a heat-hardy grape and can produce stunning examples when the yield is kept in check. Vineyards closest to the sea produce wines with pronounced saline notes. Hailing from Sicily, Grillo produces crisp and savory wines. This has tangerine, citrus blossom, peach nuances, and some herbal sensations reminiscent of Sauvignon Blanc. It’s perfect for sushi night, clams, green aromatic herbs and soft fresh cheese.
Chateau de La Greffiere Macon La Roche Vineuse - Let’s get the language barrier out of the way. Macon La Roche wines are produced under the Macon appellation (the geographical name of a region, village, or vineyard under which a winegrower is authorized to identify and market wine) within the communes of La Roche-Vineuse, Chevagny-les-Chevrieres and Hurigny in Southern Burgundy, France. La Roche-Vineuse (the vinous rock) covers white wines produced exclusively from the Chardonnay grape variety. These are 40+ year old Chardonnay vines grown on precious limestone soils that produce some of the finest examples of the grape we know of. Aged gently on oak, rolling with lush, ripe golden apple, pastry and mineral flavors and focused by the bright structure of tangy acid, it is a classic, year after year. It finds it’s perfect matches with crab, halibut, and creamy runny cheeses. Also nice with falling leaves!
Massimo Rivetti Vigna Serraboella Barbera D’Alba – One of those wines we are really lucky to get! With 5 generations of history, the Rivetti family makes high quality wine by starting in the Serraboella, a Southwestern facing hillside vineyard with meticulous attention paid to every step in the process with respect for the environment. From using no herbicides, to only using organic fertilizers on the white clay and stone soil, to being the first winery in the area to control pests with the use of natural pheromones for “sexual confusion”, and finally the careful selection of high quality fruit by hand harvesting every bunch of grapes. The Barbera d'Alba Serraboella is aged 20 months in wood and 6 months in bottle (minimum), made only in the best vintages, and in a very limited quantity. Dark berries, mocha, iris, pipe tobacco, baked plum, cherry, leather, clove, star anise… A perfect complement to charcuterie, an oven baked pizza, or creamy, meaty, protein laden dishes.
Constant Disruptions Zinfandel Pagani Ranch - Pagani Ranch vineyard lies along Highway 12 in Sonoma Valley near the town of Kenwood. Before it was a vineyard, this land was part of the Wildwood Dairy Farm. Felice Pagani purchased it in the late 1880’s and planted the many small vineyard blocks that make up the ranch. Today, the site is tended by the fourth generation of the Pagani family. It is one of very few vineyards comprised primarily of 100 year old vines. This is a tiny three barrel production packed with red fruit flavors, elegance, and a balancing firm tannic structure. Red cherry jam, pomegranate, mint, rose petal, spice and grip. Fire up the grill, and rip into this!
Long Meadow Ranch Anderson Valley Pinot Noir – Hailing from estate vineyards in the Anderson Valley located about 100 miles north of the San Francisco bay and 10 miles from the Pacific. The valley is perfectly positioned and shaped to funnel ocean breezes and fog in from the Pacific coast. Rain is also plentiful, keeping vineyards cool. An attractive spicy incense and herbal tea aroma lead to beautiful reduced red cherry and ripe pomegranate flavors that expand with each sip. The texture is pliantly tannic and polished, supported by a near perfect acidity that keeps the dreamy fruit flavors sharp and focused. Let this wine bring out your inner gourmet! Duck Breast with cherry mostarda, Squab with spiced plums, Grilled Quail with chanterelles, or Salmon with a ginger-maple reduction.
